Corse region
Although Corsica is classed as a region of France, it is actually more like an individual country.  It has a very Medierranean feel, which is not surprising as it is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean sea.  The interior of the island is mountainous, the coast varies from rugged rocky cliffs to sandy beaches, but wherever you go the scenery is spectacular.  There has been considerable effort made by the government to re-introduce tradional crafts and culture on the island, as much of it was dying out due to its' young people moving away.  However there are now many museums, galleries and craft centres devoted to the island's cultural heritage, which make for fascinating visiting.  The climate is wonderful, with long hot summers tempered by sea breezes.  As in all parts of France, the cuisine is excellent, with cheese, wine and seafood being local specialities.
Corsica Beach There is a wide range of accommodation available, from hotels and bed and breakfast establisments to villas and gites which are privately owned and available for self catering guests.  You are assured of a warm welcome and a memorable holiday.
The Departments
Ajaccio is the capital of both the island and of the department of Corse-du-Sud, which is the southern end of the island.  There is an airport here with flights to the UK.  There are many beaches and cliffs and the interior of the department also has stunning scenery.  The architecture is Mediterranean with thick walls providing insulation and many whitewashed villages sleeping in the sun.  The main crops here are olives, citrus fruits and cork.
Calvi Sunset The department of Haute Corse is at the northern end of the island.  Again the main industry is tourism although there are olive groves, vineyards and wheat are grown and the milk from the island's many sheep is used to make Roquefort cheese.  The architecture is similar to that of Corse-du-Sud and there are many beaches to enjoy.  There are miles of walking trails for the more energetic in the forested and mountainous interior.  The scenery here is spectacular.
