Franche Comte region

Franche Comte is right on France's eastern border with the Jura Mountains forming a natural barrier on the border with Switzerland. It is a rural region with nearly half its land covered in forest. The mountains are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts with many activities on offer and make an ideal alternative for those seaking a quieter ski-ing holiday than can be found in the Alps. The scenery is stunning. The Departments
The department of Doubs is named after the river which flows through it. It is a green and rural department with nearly half its area covered in forest, with many hiking and biking trails. It is also stunningly beautiful with lakes, rivers and mountains. There are several small ski resorts offering both downhill and cross country ski-ing. The region's capital, Besancon, is found in this department.
Territoire-de-Belfort is the smallest department in France and is a place rich in history and culture. Its' location on the borders of Alsace, Germany and Switzerland means that it has changed hands several times and has absorbed different cultures. It is an ideal place for hiking, horse riding and cycling on miles of marked trails.
Areuse Gorges The department of Haute-Soane is another rural area with miles of forests and hills which are an walkers or horse riders paradise with miles of marked trails. The river Soane, which gives the department its name, flows for more than 100 kms and is an excellent place to hire a boat and take life gently. The beautiful towns and villages of the department are fascinating to explore.
The final department in the region is Jura. It is a stunningly beautiful place of forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and mountains. Outdoor activities abound and walking, climbing, ski-ing, horse riding, sailing and swimming, plus many more, are all on offer. The cheese and wine of Jura are justly famous and many of the vineyards offer guided tours and tasting sessions.
